The Sheringham 1940's Weekend - Britain's most spectacular historical celebration - is absolutely awe-inspiring and a real sight to see. I had been meaning to go for many years, and finally made it in 2024 and loved every minute of it. I’ll definitely be back!
This amazing festival draws 40,000 excited visitors and locals every year, all ready to step back into wartime Britain. What began as a small gathering nearly quarter of a century ago has grown into an extraordinary three-day spectacle, bringing together the town's pubs, clubs, shops and churches into a lively network of community spirit.
The magic unfolds moment by moment - if you’re there at the right time, a magnificent Lancaster bomber should rumble overhead, or even a Spitfire, and vintage military vehicles will definitely roll proudly through the streets below.
You’ll be treated to everything from toe-tapping live music (literally) to fascinating historical displays, plus the chance to win £330 worth of prizes in the free ration book competition.
Fancy donning your best 1940’s gear? You won’t be the only one!
Though there's absolutely no pressure to dress up (phew I say!) plenty of visitors simply come to soak up the incredible atmosphere. But what a treat it was to see all those who really go to town with their costumes, it’s amazing!
And thanks to the North Norfolk Railway's special services between Sheringham and Holt, you won't miss a single moment of this fantastic celebration of Britain's wartime spirit.
The North Norfolk Railway, also known as the Poppy Line railway, plays a huge part in this weekend event as it puffs its way along the 5½ mile line from Sheringham through Weybourne and on to Holt, each station offering wonderful glimpses into 1940’s Britain, and what wonderful nostalgia it brings to everyone.
If you’re not at the station, then you’ll be strolling down Sheringham's High Street being completely swept up into a magical bygone era.
The familiar voices of Norman Wisdom and Vera Lynn float through the air along Station Road, while shopkeepers work their magic, turning simple shop fronts into wonderful 1940s establishments. It’s fascinating and fun to just wander along the road, soaking up the atmosphere. Staff proudly wear period costumes, and the yearly window dressing competition brings out everyone's creative spirit, with traders showing off with the most incredible historical displays.
Holt Station, the end of the line for the North Norfolk Railway, buzzes with excitement as it hosts an historical Exhibition Display along with trade stalls and live music.
Weybourne station, half way along the line, isn’t to be forgotten as it offers displays and demonstrations that capture the railway's wartime story.
The platforms come alive with dancing couples swaying to live music, creating a wonderful atmosphere that binds all three locations together.
There’s no parking at Weybourne station, but thanks to the North Norfolk Railway's generosity, a free vintage bus service connects these three towns.
