Why you should visit Castle Acre Priory

Located in the pretty flintstone village of Castle Acre, Castle Acre Priory was founded in 1090 by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey. This remarkable site showcases some really fine medieval architecture with its impressive west front (photo), cloister, and the well-preserved Prior's Lodging, which offers a glimpse into monastic life.

For over 450 years, the priory served as a vital centre for religious activities and learning and it was once one of the largest monastic sites in England. Today, Castle Acre Priory is managed by English Heritage and welcomes visitors to explore these incredible ruins.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for peaceful escape, Castle Acre Priory promises an unforgettable experience. It’s one that is definitely worth paying to go into the ruins, in my opinion, as you get a much better sense of the scale as you stand underneath the arches and enter the lodgings.
