Descend into Norfolk's Neolithic Mines: Grimes Graves Beckons February 20, 2025 |
Descend into Norfolk's Neolithic Mines: Grimes Graves Beckons Good Afternoon, Grimes Graves is one of Britain's most extraordinary Neolithic flint mines. This lunar-like landscape in Norfolk's Breckland heath hides over 400 underground shafts, dug more than 5,000 years ago. As the only accessible Neolithic flint mine in Britain, this intriguing site offers a unique glimpse into our ancestors' skill and creativity. If you want to discover more, then you have the chance to descend 9 meters into Pit 1 and admire these ancient mining techniques, including the use of antler picks to extract high-quality 'floorstone' flint. The site's importance in prehistoric Britain is evident in the vast quantities of flint extracted – enough to produce about 10,000 polished stone axes from a single shaft! There’s also an excellent Visitor Centre where you can handle Neolithic tool replicas and take yourself back into the Stone Age era. You will need to bring your own picnic though. Grimes Graves really is a journey through time that’ll leave you in awe of our prehistoric past. Discover how you can explore Grimes Graves here.
Keep an eye out for next week when I’m bringing you all the joys of a Victorian seaside town on the North Norfolk coast!
Best wishes, Suzy P.S. After your ancient adventure, you can treat yourself to a stay at the Farmhouse at Fincham, just a short drive from Grimes Graves. This Grade II listed barn offers luxurious rooms, locally-sourced breakfasts, and a perfect base for exploring more of Norfolk's hidden treasures. |
